CARLOS VALLECILLA BORRERO
A life of brave entrepreneurship.
Bravery, that is the word that defines exactly the entrepreneurship history of Carlos Vallecilla Borrero, a race entrepreneur that decided to trade adolescence for business and that from the beginning made independency his goal, north and conviction.
That same conviction leads him to take his first big decision when at 15 years of age, attending the fourth year of high school, decides to withdraw his studies and begin a career in one of the most important banks of the country, first as an assistant to later occupy management positions for the main municipalities of El Valle del Cauca with barely 22 years.
But his mission wasn’t only that. He, He, always anxious to do much more, felt that the bank was not the final stage to establish his summit; and this is how, when having vacations in Panamá, he discovered the big opportunity that will end up becoming his first venture and that will be the bastion of one of the largest business groups in the country, Grupo Carval.
“La Fonda del Pollo”
The first chicken broiler in Cali, was born from his hand in 1950. This innovative business was his first official approach to entrepreneurship, alternating these activities with his functions at the bank.
Time was passing by and with this, his dreams and goals where growing. Just when he was on a victorious path, comes the first difficulty. His first big negotiation, in which he had invested all his capital, did not go as expected and ended up becoming his first bankruptcy statement.
More than 500 chicken that had been imported for fattening and marketing, did not give the expected results and their dreams had their first hurdle to overcome. However, his initial business was still growing and gave him the tools to get out of this situation and return to the good path he came for.
His business as a poultry farmer grew and his horizons expanded and his horizons were getting broader. Don Carlos managed to stablish himself as a beacon of trust and effectiveness which brought him big new business and opportunities. Little by little his company started to focus on animal and agricultural health and nutrition, becoming the Carval Group, today made up of 8 companies that are: Carval, Pharmetique Labs, Research Pharmaceutical, Procoval, Bioart, La Vital, Porcival y Bionutrec. These companies are so diverse as Animal Health and Nutrition, Agricultural Productivity, Consumer Goods, Pharmaceutical Products, Orthopedic Medical Equipment, Biopharmaceutical and Natural Products among others, with presence in 18 countries in Latin America and China; and with more than 2,400 employees.
